(Foolish) Federal Fairy Tales

by Edwin van de Haar

The plea for the revival of an alleged ‘libertarian interstate federalist tradition’, as the editor of this periodical calls it, needs critical scrutiny. This term is used far too loosely, which goes against all existing evidence. Even when the claim would be accepted, many of the underlying assumptions of the idea are under-analyzed or outright overlooked. It all comes down to the conclusion that the idea of a ‘libertarian interstate federalist tradition’ does not go anywhere, not in theory and not in practice.
